Race Report: I-55 Raceway May 14th

(St. Louis, MO - May 14th, 2006) -- This weekend Shane would head to I-55 Raceway while Evan and the rest of the team would head to Indiana to test for next weekends big race in New Castle, IN. Once again disaster would strike our dirt program.

In the heat race, Shane would start 6th of 10. The track was starting to slick over after hot laps. This was not good news for us. Shane is not in favor of these kinds of tracks. However, he was still able to pass a few cars and work his way up to a 4th place finish. This would give him an 11th place starting spot for the feature event.

In the feature, we were pretty excited about how everything was going to turn out. We knew we had a good car and we made an adjustment to the chassis just before the start to give us a better car for the feature. When the green flag flew we went right by a car to move into the top 10. Everyone was single file along the bottom, in order to make anything happen we needed to find another line. We moved up a lane of the track. This would cause us to loose 2 spots. However, we got very lucky as the caution flag flew, this gave us our spot back from the previous lap. We were again sitting in a good position and we now knew we had to stay on the bottom.

We tried for several laps to pick us the 8th position. However, while Shane was starting to make a move he would hit a major rut in the race track. This would throw our car all over the place. When Shane went into the next corner he knew something was wrong as he felt the rear end move a different way. As he was going into the next corner, the driveshaft pulled out and swung around to beat the interior out of the car and hit his leg pretty hard. He also lost a trailing arm, spring, shock that was broken in half at the body, and a brake line. He would then slide into the inside wall and park it for the night. Apparently, when he hit the rut I broke the bolt connecting the trailing arm to the frame in half. This caused the rear end the move all over the place which pulled the driveshaft out and caused complete chaos.

This was a really unfortunate accident. We really needed a good run at this track as we have failed to run decent here all year long. We were once again in a spot for a very good finish and mechanical problems would strip it from us. We had plans to head to Tri-City Speedway Sunday but we would not have been able to fix the car in time. As it turns out they called the race for rain anyway. This is a good example of why a second car is needed. We are working as hard as we can to save up some money for a second car. We will for sure have it race ready for the 2007 racing season. However, we are trying to purchase one before the end of the season.

Next week, the team will head out for the second STARS of Karting event in Indiana May 19th-21st. Both drivers are very excited as the team was able to pick up some very useful information this past weekend during testing. Check back to the website after the races for results and another race report.
