Weekend Report: I-55 Raceway May 27th & Tri-City Speedway May 28th (St. Louis, MO - May 29th, 2006) -- This week Walters Motorsports headed to I-55 Raceway Saturday Night and Tri-City Speedway the following night. The team was really looking forward to the weekend as they had a very disappointing race the weekend before at I-55. The team spent many hours at the shop during the week and was able to put the mangled car back together. On Saturday, Shane started dead last in the heat race. The track was very slick and hard to race on. On top of this he started to loose his brakes for the second week in a row. On a track like this he really needed brakes and he was being forced to pump them up going into the corner. He was able to pass a few cars and work his way into a transfer spot of 5th. This would put him 16th in the starting line up for the feature. In the feature, they thought they figured out the brake problem. He was working his way through the field and made is way up to the 10th or 11th position. However, with 10 laps to go his brakes would be lost completely. He didn't want another DNF so he continued to drive it. He decided to work the bottom to middle of the track and keep his distance between the car in front of him. Of course he would get passed by a few cars while he was struggling. Shane was stomping on the gas which pitched the car, he was doing this to slow him down a little and keep from sliding up the race track. With one lap to go he was running in the 12th position. However, on the last lap he would get passed by two cars. One went high and one went low. This would force him to a disappointing 14th place finish. The team was very disappointed as they again had a great car only to have a mechanical problem bite them yet again. On Sunday, the team headed to Tri-City Speedway. They spent a lot of hours at the shop Sunday morning working to figure out the brake problem. They discovered a brake line had broke off and another one was loose. This is what caused him to have no brakes the night before. Now that they had the problem worked out they were again excited about the upcoming race at Tri-City. In the heat race, Shane would again start dead last. He would quickly work his way up to the 5th position. However, he would get held up big time for the rest of the race by the 4th place car. In order to transfer to the feature you had to finish in the 4th position or better. Shane would drive under him 10 times during the race. The competitor cut him off every time coming off the corner. On turn four of the final lap Shane had his nose to his door. Shane thought he saw him, if he didn't hear him he knew he could hear him. However, the driver still cut down on him. This would send the other driver in circles and Shane would drive on to the 4th place finish. In the feature, Shane would again start in the 16th position of the 34 competitors that signed in for the event. His goal was a top 5 and he had some driving to do if he wanted that spot. Within the first three laps Shane would work his way into the 9th position. Over the next 3 laps he worked his way into the 6th position. The car was handling great as we made a few adjustments to the car before the feature. However, while he was working on the 5th place car another car would spin out in front of him. Shane would spin the car and try to slide into him to avoid a head on collision. He would smack the other competitor with the right side of his car. This would send Shane to the back of the 22 car field. He would spend the last 10 or so laps driving his way back through the field for the second time. However, the car was now handling very bad. Shane thought the J-Bar had bent when he ran into that other driver. He said the car was basically steering itself going into the corner and when he got off the gas the car would jump all over the place. He was also turning the wheel really far left off the corner as the car just would not get straight. He thought his night was done and he would again finish in a disappointing spot. Surprisingly, he continued to push through the field. He was able to drive his way into the 7th position and finish in the best position he has ever finished in with the dirt car. He said it was the hardest car he had ever driven. The trouble would strike just as he crossed the finish line. He started to hear a grinding noise in the rear of the car. When he started to slow down the rear end locked up and he was forced to pull into the infield. When he got out of the car he saw rear end grease all over the rear of the car. When he looked closer he could see the rear end had actually pulled apart and bent upward. This would explain why the car was driving really weird. Who knows where the team would have finished if they did not have this problem. However, before he ran into the other car, it looked like it was a top 3 car. Next weekend the team plans to put their wheels back on the DIRT. Shane might head to I-55 Raceway Saturday Night. If the car is not tore up to bad he will then head to Tri-City Speedway on Sunday. However, they are not for sure what they are going to do. They are going to need another rear end for next week and they have another one. However, they might just save their money and buy a back-up car that the team has been looking at. The plan was to buy it in the next few weeks and put it together over the next few months for 2007. However, now that another problem has struck, the team might save some money and just buy the car now. They will then get both cars ready for 2007 or later in 2006 and have two cars ready to go. One will be for Tri-City and the other for I-55 Raceway. They are unsure what the plans are. Either way a lot of hours will be spent at the shop for the second week in a row.
