Race Report: STARS of Karting - Lowe's Motor Speedway (St. Louis, MO - July 9th, 2006) -- Walters Motorsports headed to Charlotte, NC for the third leg of the STARS of Karting. The team really needed some good results to stay in the points battle and more importantly they needed to finish all the main events. On Saturday, Shane and Evan both were struggling a lot to get a good set-up for the racing action that would take place during the racing event. The were both super tight in one section of the track but on the other side through the fast sweepers they were both super loose and could not get the rear to hook up. In qualifying, Shane qualified in the 15th position of 20 while Evan qualified 43 of 45 as he struggled with an ill handling kart as well as a motor that was struggled to get all the fuel it needed. In the Saturday pre-final's on Saturday, Shane was running a solid 12th position and right on the bumper of another driver going for 11th. However, he would overdrive the kart and drive off the track. He would return to the track in 16th and work his way all the way back to the 13th position to beat out the only world champion of karting to ever hit the tracks Lake Speed who won the world championship in 1978. Evan would start dead last in his pre final of 23 and he would finish in the 20th position. This would force him to a last chance qualifier to try and make the main event. He would start in the 5th position and he was able to work up as high as 4th. In the closing laps he fell to 5th, they were taking the top 6 to the main event so he was in the show. In the Saturday features, Shane would start in the 13th position. On the start of the race two karts would pile on top of each other on the start. Shane would then get run over on the right which pushed him to the left, he was then run over on the left and he had two karts run over him at the same time. He would continue in the 14th position. He would drive very hard for the 20 lap main event. He would finish in a very respectable 12th position. When he came into the pits the actually saw how lucky they were. The radiator had been twisted and he bolt that held it to the frame was broken off so it was just hanging there. Luckily it was pinched between the frame and the battery box so it was hard for it to move but it could have been very bad. They got lucky for once. Evan would start in the 39th position. On the 4th corner a huge pile up would happen it front of him and he would weave his way through 10 spinning karts. He came out in the 32nd position. He was not done there. He would work his way passed three other other karts and finish in the 29th position. On Sunday, Shane and Evan were both wore out from driving the past two days. The track was very bumpy and it was very hard on your ribs and hips since these karts do not have any kind of suspension. As a result Shane qualified in the 16th position of 20 and Evan qualified 40th of 45. They both could not nail a set-up for the track conditions on top of being worn down from racing. During Sunday's pre-final's, Shane would start in the back and he knew he needed to focus on the track in front of him since a wreck in the first corner was almost for certain. Sure enough 4 karts piled up in the first corner and he would come out in the 12th position. He was running great and working hard to get around the kart in front of him for the 11th position. However, while trying to get around the kart in front of him we would run off the track and lose all those positions he gained pushing him back to 16th. He was in clear sailing for an already disappointing 16th place finish. A kart went off the track in front of him and the competitor came back on the track. He looked back and saw Shane coming about 40-50 mph faster. He left the entire bottom lane open for Shane and at the last possible second he decided to cut down and close the lane. Shane almost got through but Shane's right rear would hit the other drivers left front. The force from the side sent Shane slamming hard into the right side of the seat. It was hard enough to pull a bolt with a 1 1/2" washer through the fiberglass seat just from his ribs hitting the seat. Shane shattered the right rear wheel into pieces and we was sent flying into the air. When he landed he struggled for air as the wind was knocked out of him. Shane finished in the 19th position with a DNF. He said it was the hardest hit he has ever taken in a race car or kart toping last week's dirt race. This is two bad wrecks in two weeks for Shane. Evan's pre-final went through fairly uneventful. he needed to finish in the 17th position to make the show 18th on back were forced to the last chance qualifier. Evan would finish 20th and he would be forced to yet another LCQ. In the LCQ Evan started in the 6th position. He worked his way into the 5th position. He was in the show as they were taking the top 6 to the main event. He was running very strong in the 5th position right behind 4th with 6th directly behind him. On the final corner Evan would get bumped off the track by the guy behind him. This was a very stupid move on his part since he was already in the show and there was no need for any contact to pick up one position. As a result a soild starting position for the main event would get tossed out the window and Evan would fail to qualify for Sunday's main event. In Sunday's final, Shane would start on the last row in the 19th position. On the start again Shane would look out for the major turn 1 wreck and he was surprised when he only picked up 2 positions. However, he would drive his way through the field over the next few laps. He would pick up 2 more positions along the way. He have yet another disappointing 15th place run. He thought about pulling off because his ribs where hurting so bad. He decided to stick it out hoping a few more drivers would wreck out and he would be able to pick up another position or two. This would not happen and he would take another major hit in the point standings. Next Weekend the team might head to the St. Louis Karting Assoc. It all depends and if the drivers can get healed up before the weekend get to them. The team will make a decision late in the week.
