Race Report: CSSS Event # 3 Iowa Int. Raceway Marshalltown, IA (St. Louis, MO - July 25th, 2006) -- This weekend the team decided to head to Iowa International Raceway in Marshalltown, IA. The team had high hopes heading into the weekend and made a lot of adjustments to the racing program before hitting the road. In qualifying, Evan jumped out to grab the pole of 4 karts with Christian Vogel close behind him. Shane after struggling all weekend long during practice would stand up and qualify in the 7th position of 18 karts. In the pre-finals, Evan got a little confused on the start and as a result Vogel got a jump on him to grab the lead. However, Christian caught up to his dad and was caught behind him. This allowed Evan to catch up and get around Christian. Evan would go on to win the pre-final. Shane started in the 7th position. On the first lap he was passed by 2 other karts. He was able to get around one more kart and was running in the 8th position. On the final corner on the final lap he decided to try a different line going into the corner. However, he was in the marbles, as soon as he touched the brake the rear end came around on him. He would get passed by many karts as he could not get going since karts were going around him high and low. He would come across the line in 13th. In the final, again Christian got a jump on Evan to grab the lead. He continued to lead for the first lap or two. However, while in clear sailing he would drive off the track and get pushed back to the 3rd position. He would get held up by the 2nd place kart for a long time. This was enough for Evan to pull out to a major lead. Christian would not have enough time to catch up giving Evan his 3rd win of the season and a full sweep on the weekend. Shane was starting in the 13th position for his final with a kart fast enough for a top 5 run. He knew he would never make it to the top 5 in only 14 laps but he was going to get everything he could out of it. On the start he would pass a few karts. However, after working around them he would get held up by another competitor for the first 3 laps. By the time he got around him the karts in front of him were 60-70 kart lengths in front of him. He would drive very hard but come up just short. By the time the 14 lap race was over he had closed the gap to within 5-10 kart lengths. He would finish in the 10th position. However, his lap times were fast enough for a top 5. Once again lady luck would get the worst of him. Next Weekend the team might head to Whiteland Raceway Park in Whiteland, IN for the Indy Karting Series event. They are unsure at the moment because next weekend could be the last weekend before the major tour. I say tour because after this weekend they will be out of town 5 weekends in a row for sure heading to 5 different states. If they do make the trip this upcoming weekend that would make the tour even longer and they would be out of town for 9 of the 10 past weekends.
