Race Report: Stars of Karting (Shawano, WI) - Hard Hit Plus Best Stars Finish (St. Louis, MO - August 7th, 2006) -- This past weekend the team headed for Shawano, WI for event # 3 of the Stars of Karting East Series. On Friday, which was the practice day they spent most of the day just messing with gearing and small chassis adjustments. However, toward the end of the day Evan was coming off turn 5 when he went off the track. He would spin around and hit a pole going backwards on the left side of his kart. The pole came through and bent the chassis over and up as well as hitting Evan's leg. Evan would get taken to the ambulance but he would turn out to be just a little bit swore. The chassis on the other hand was junked and he would be done for the rest of the weekend. On Saturday, Shane would struggle as he qualified 13th of 16 karts. His kart was bottoming out and throwing the handing off. During the pre final, Shane would finish in the 11th position. He still was not happy with the kart at all, he came in made a bunch of changes to the chassis as well as another gear change. For the final, Shane would work his way up to the 8th position and he was battling with Matt Zies for the spot as the two traded positions several times. With only 5 laps remaining in the 15 lap final Shane was right on his bumper and setting up to make a pass on turn 6th. However, coming out of turn 5 he got a little loose off the corner and would be forced to go in the grass. He would loss 4 positions and fall to 12th. He tried to focus and get some of those spots back. However, he was driving very hard and only 7 corners later he would drop another wheel and spin into the hay barrels. He would be forced to yet another Stars of Karting DNF. On Sunday, Shane knew he had a fast kart. However, all that would get thrown out the window because Sunday morning the rain would fall. During morning practice in the rain he was 6th quickest. The track would dry off a little by the time qualifying came around. He would qualify in the 10th position. However, he was only 3 tenths of a second off 4th. He would start the pre-final in 10th. He would work his way again to the 8th position. He was battling hard for 8th through 6th. However, while in the heat of the battle his throttle cable would brake and he would be forced to another DNF. In the final, Shane knew he had his work cut out for him as we would start 15th of 16 karts. On the start he would not waste any time as he went through the middle of 2 karts. Going into turn 4 another karts would get sideway in the grass and jump onto the track air born. The airborne karts would T-Bone another kart directly in front of Shane. Shane would check up very quick and he just barley caught them with his front bumper as they went crazy in front of him. The two karts would then slam into the hay barrels. This was a lot of action for only racing 4 corners. Shane would not stop there. he would continue to pick his way through the field. He would work his way all the way to the 5th position and he would again find himself on the rear bumper of Matt Zies. while Shane was trying to get around Zies another kart Shane already passed would give Shane the bump and run. Shane laid back as he saw a wreck starting to form. Going into a very very fast uphill corner the kart would jump a curb and slid into Zies. Zies would spin backwards jump another curb and fly back onto the track with a kart that was junked. The other driver would continue on while Shane got passed both of them to pick up the 4th position. Shane would hold his 4th place spot for the next 5 laps. He was starting to get very tired and he knew a driver was right on his bumper. On the last corner he saw a kart's nose on his inside. He would slam the door and hold his position. He would slide in the grass across the finish line. This would be Shane's best ever Stars finish. He was very happy with his finish and he is really looking forward to the Stars finally in Toronto, Canada. Next weekend the team is thinking of heading the either SLKA or head to Clinton, IN for the Little Italy Grand Prix. This is another street race they have added to the schedule. The weekend after that they will head to The 61 Kartway in Delmar, IA for the $2,500 to win TaG race. For more information on the above race tracks including driving directions.
