Race Report: STARS of Karting at Norman, OK

(St. Louis, MO - March 20th, 2006) -- We were heading into our first ever STARS of Karting event. This is professional karting and many of the best drivers in the world were on hand. Many drivers were from over sea's including Italy and Bermuda just to name a few. Walters Motorsports had a very bad weekend before we even hit the track on Friday. Somewhere along the 8 hour drive one of the kart stands in our trailer broke. This sent the kart with brand new graphics to the ground. I ripped some of the graphics of the front bumper and put a small hole in the side. All this happened before we hit the track.

During Friday Practice Evan struggled to get the carb running right on his brand new JICA motor. Shane spent the first 2 practice sessions breaking in the motor on the cold morning. On the third session he went a little faster and locked up the motor. We thought this was a carb problem because a screw on the carb broke off and we thought that caused it to die. We went out for the fourth practice session after fixing the carb and popped the motor on the first lap. This was a brand new motor without a single race on it. Evan continued to struggle throughout the day. There were many sessions he went around for a single lap and had to pull off because he was way off the pace.

On Saturday we put a back-up motor on Shane's kart which he was able to run with. He went out for practice in the rain and was 10th fastest of 30 or so of the best karters in the world. Evan once again struggled with the carb. He started the weekend with the wrong carb because nobody could get us the right one in time for opening weekend. We tried to make due with what we had but it didn't do us much good. Both drivers missed qualifying this time because of a tire issue. Mainly because we need one more person on our karting crew. This series was brand new to us, just to learn everything about the series took some time.

Shane was forced to start at the back of the pre-final. He was able to work his way up to a 16th place finish from 28th. Evan did not even complete a lap in his pre-final and was forced to a consi for Sunday.

On Sunday, Evan went out for his consi and once again had problems. He finished the race but he was still off the pace. He would not make the main event. Shane would start his main event in 16th. He was able to drive up to 10th place. We had the wrong gear in the kart by far and away. As the race went on he would be passed 4 or 5 times on the slower tighter corners because of his poor gear choice. He was in a solid 15th place finish when he noticed the motor making sounds. His first reaction was that he was going to blow another motor. Instead, the motor mounts were just coming loose. They eventually came off and Shane was forced to a DNF at the start of the season.

It was cold and raining all weekend long. We are really looking forward to the next STARS event. Evan will have the right carb and he will be able to stay on pace. Hopefully, Shane will not suffer anymore mechanical problems. Walters Motorsports has set goals at a top 10 in points for the season. This is still very possible for both drivers. Of the 5 series events you are able to drop one event for the points race (your worst finish) both drivers will use this last race for there drop weekend. Stay tuned as the season progresses to see the latest results and keep up with the point standings.
