Race Report: I-55 Raceway April 15th

(St. Louis, MO - April 16th, 2006) -- This was our first trip to our home track of I-55 Raceway in Pevely, MO. It was actually a special show as NASCAR stars Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace were there racing there DIRT cars. We were hoping for a good finish in out first trip to the track.

Things started out pretty good as we pulled a #40 of 75 pill draw. There were a total of 32 cars and we knew we would start somewhere in the middle of the field for our heat race. As it turned out we were correct and we started 4th of 8. After the green flag flew we drove up to 2nd or 3rd. It was only for a second and we were passed back. The first 4 cars pulled away slightly from the rest of the field and the top drivers were all racing very close with any one of them able to win the race. As the checkered flag flew we came home with a 4th place finish. This would put us 16th of 24 starters for the feature.

Since we were pitted on the outside of the track and the PA system is not as good out there we almost missed the call for the start of the race. We were not the only ones as there were 1 or 2 others cars on the outside that did the same thing. Since we were late they started me 20th instead of 16th. We made a few adjustments on the car to make it a little better for the feature. As it turns out they were the right adjustments. The car was very fast. On the first lap we jumped up to 16th passing 4 cars in a single lap. We continued to make our way through the field. As we were going for the 14th or 15th position a car would spin out in front of us and Shane would almost miss him but he had nowhere to go. He pitched the car as sideways as possible to try and avoid a head on collision. He did just that and the car instead hit him right on the right rear tire.

When the green flag came out again, the car was totally different. All those spots we picked up were lost as we started drifting backwards through the field. Shane was feeling out the car in knew he had the right rear tire going down. When a car spun out and caused another caution just as we were about to get lapped. Shane pulled off the track to the outer pit area. The WMS pit crew along with a little help from some members of the Price Brothers Pit Crew got the tire changed in under 20 seconds.

Shane would then attempt to get back on the track. He would have made it on time. However, the Late Models and their crew members four wheelers were block the entire track entrance. we lost 3-5 laps while sitting on the ramp. The officials were moving us in and out of the late models.

We finally made it back out on track laps down from the leader. With 5 or so laps remaining we were able to pass 4 or 5 cars. However, none of these passes made a difference since we were laps down. We would finish with a 19th place run since there were a few cars that wrecked out in the first couple laps.

Next week Walters Motorsports will head to SLKA (www.SLKA.net) for the opening event of the 2006 season. After winning the track championship at SLKA last year we have stepped up to professional karting and as a results we will only run 2 or 3 times at SLKA during the entire season. We will look for a good result after the event and stay tuned to the website for a race report, photos, and results to be posted on both Shane and Evans 2006 schedule.
