Weekend Report: I-55 Raceway, Tri-City Speedway, and SLKA

(St. Louis, MO - May 8th, 2006) -- Walters Motorsports decided to take this weekend and see how many races we could pack into the weekend. We ended up with our best weekend results of the season.

On Saturday Morning, both drivers headed to SLKA in Pevely, MO for testing. Shane was trying out his new and improved brake system along with taking pictures while Evan was just doing simple tuning on the chassis to make it perfect for Sunday's event.

Saturday Night, the team went up the hill to I-55 Raceway also in Pevely, MO. We were very excited about this weekend. Last week we had the best car we ever had and cut down a tire. However, this week was a different story. In the heat we came out with a 6th place finish out of 11 cars. This would give us a 15th place starting spot in the feature. We had our work cut out for us if we wanted a top 10 in the feature. We were able to work our way up to 13th place of 32 cars after getting held up a little. The car was still a top 10 car. However, it was not as good as the week before.

On Sunday, the team would split. Evan and Dan would head to SLKA for Event # 2. In qualifying, Evan would jump right out to grab the pole. However, when he came across the scales he was one pound under weight. This gave him a DQ for qualifying and he would be forced to start dead last in his heat race. As the green flag flew on the heat race Evan would jump right out and make it three wide going into turn 1. By the time he left turn one he was already in second place. It would only take him until the end of that lap to jump out to the lead and take the victory. In the feature, he would start on the pole. Evan would go on to lead the race flag to flag and take home his first win of the season after last weeks disappointing results.

At the same time, Shane was at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL. He was really looking forward to racing at Tri-City as the track has always given him good results. The fact would continue to prove true. In the heat, he would start dead last in 8th. He would work his way through the field lap by lap. However, during the middle of the race a fan had to be carried away in the track ambulance. The race would be red flagged and we would be forced to wait 20 minutes until the ambulance returned from the hospital. During the break fans came onto the track while drivers climbed from their cars and began signing autographs. When When the ambulance returned in was finally time go racing again. This is the most difficult thing a racer can deal with. it is very hard to regain focus and continue racing after you lose all your groove. However, With 4 laps to go he was sitting in 3rd. While he was under the 3rd place car and going for second the caution came out. This would be a 2 lap shoot-out to the finish and we had a car that was very capable to win the heat. However, on the restart Shane's foot slipped of the gas pedal, when he went to slam it again it slipped for a second time. On the third try and finally nailed it. By this time he had already moved back to 5th with a lap and a half remaining. He would drive with everything he had knowing he just blew his first chance at a heat win. He would quickly work his way back to third. He would challenge for second on the last corner but he ran out of time and would be forced to a third place heat finish.

In the feature, we would start in 10th position. We set our goals a little higher for this race and we were gunning for a top 5 finish. In the first 10 laps we would work our way up to our goal of a 5th place run and we were still moving forward. However, with only 10 laps to go the left front caliper would break off. It would then jam against the wheel and lock the wheel up. This would make the car very darty. Not only that but he now had no front brakes and was left with rear brakes only. For the last few laps he would move to the bottom and try to protect his 5th place spot. Quickly cars would begin to pass us back. On the last lap of the last corner he would get passed by the more cars at the same time and he would be forced to a 8th place finish of 31 cars as a result. We are still happy with where we finished, it was just disappointing to see that happen.

We have uploaded photos of Shane's 2006 race car and karts. We posted Evan's new kart last week this week Shane cars were posted here check the 2006 kart it is a team design www.WaltersMotorsports.com/pictures/Photo_Pages/Shane/06/06RacingAlbum/index.htm

Next week, the team will park the karts to get them ready for the second STARS of Karting event in Indiana May 19th. We will again head to I-55 Raceway May 13th and Tri-City Speedway May 14th for their "Mothers Day Spectacular". We are already looking forward to the upcoming weekend as we have really started the dial in our DIRT car and we are slowly starting to make our way to consistent top 10's and even a few top 5's. Check back to the website after the races for results and another race report.
